The Norval Foundation’s NF50 Wine Club is a prestigious gathering of discerning wine enthusiasts and supporters of education and the arts. With only 50 coveted memberships available, the club brings together like-minded people who share a passion for exceptional wine, art, education and philanthropy.

At the heart of NF50 lies a collaboration between some of South Africa’s most esteemed winemakers – Andrea & Chris Mullineux, Donovan Rall, Callie Louw, Chris Alheit, and Hannes & Nathalia Storm. These visionary vintners annually craft a unique barrel of wine, dedicated to the celebration of art and creativity and for the benefit of the Norval Foundation and its’ Learning Centre, where thousands of young lives from under-resourced communities find inspiration and opportunity through the power of art.

The experience goes beyond the bottle. Every vintage is adorned with a label that doubles as a work of art, created by a talented African artist. It’s a fusion of craftsmanship and creativity – a tribute to the vibrant cultural heritage of our continent. It is not just about indulgence – it’s about making a difference.

Proceeds from the NF50 go to supporting the Norval Foundation and its’ Learning Centre, a place where thousands of young people from under-resourced communities are inspired and their creativity is ignited. Join them as they raise a glass to the privilege, pleasure and purpose of the intersection of wine, art and education, and to the transformative impact it has on the lives of young learners. Welcome to the NF50 Wine Club.

Brett Murray

Brett Murray’s ambition throughout his long career has been to speak truth to power. Satire as a tool for political debate has long been a cornerstone of his practice. ‘Again Again’, a solo exhibition held at Everard Read Johannesburg in 2017, continued with this default setting as a satirical commentator. The title piece for the show, the pair of monumental, exaggeratedly rotund bronze bulls now permanently installed at the Norval Foundation exemplified the concepts underpinning this body of work.

Again Again’ was attuned to our then-current political Emperors and their henchmen. It was a reflection on historical versions of the same story. Now, it contemplates continuity rather than change; a frozen stasis. An introspective stock-take.

The print is an extension of all these ideas.

These bulls as Emperors are almost-human mirror images of one another, bonded in a perpetual and futile cyclical embrace of similarity. The desire is to invite audiences to contemplate notions of nationalism, cronyism and idealism reflected at each other, as well as to engage with an iconic image by one of South Africa’s foremost artistic social analysts. The mirroring of the figures introduces an element of tension, suggesting in an age of rising polarization that those we stand up against are in fact no different than ourselves.

“In reflecting on what is unfolding around me,” Murray comments, “I hope to articulate a very personal understanding and an idiosyncratic psychological sense of place, and to begin to describe who I am with this anomalous vision.”

Faced with a critique registering closer to tragedy than comedy, we are paradoxically entertained. However, as Murray explains, “I force us to look and acknowledge what is really going on. Perhaps to challenge the upheaval in the world around us and begin to define a preferred ideal in which I would like to live.”

Winemakers Descriptions:

Alheit Vineyards – Northern Lights

Widely regarded as one of South Africa’s most exciting new wineries, Alheit Vineyards was founded in 2010 by Chris and Suzaan Alheit, a passionate husband-and-wife team dedicated to expressing the soul of their country’s heritage vineyards.

Northern Lights is a landmark blend that captures the essence of the Skurfberg region for the very first time. This wine combines two extraordinary single-vineyard sources: Oudam farm (known for Huilkrans) and Arbeidseind farm (known for Magnetic North). The result is a wine of striking precision and purity—aromatic with citrus zest and rooibos and layered with a powerful yet refined palate.

Storm Wines – Bokkeveld

Storm Wines is the vision of Hannes and Nathalia Storm, who meticulously craft their wines from two small, distinct parcels in the celebrated Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Every bottle reflects their unwavering commitment to site-expressive, artisanal winemaking.

Bokkeveld is rooted in clay-rich, stony soils on a cool, north-facing slope near the Atlantic Ocean. These low-vigour vines, planted in 2008, yield a wine of exceptional structure and depth. Floral aromatics blend seamlessly with dark cherry, berry compote, and subtle wood spice from French oak. The palate is elegant and textured, finishing long and graceful. A wine with both immediate charm and remarkable aging potential.

Callie Louw – Porseleinberg 2024

Crafted by the inimitable Callie Louw, Porseleinberg has become synonymous with uncompromising quality and authenticity in South African wine. The 2024 vintage reflects a year of contrasts—abundant winter rainfall restored water reserves, while the dry growing season challenged the vines to concentrate on their expression.

The fruit underwent traditional whole-bunch fermentation under a submerged cap, followed by 12 months of maturation in large-format foudre. A standout barrel, designated F17, was chosen during blending.

The result is a wine of rare finesse—perfumed and poised, with elegant tannins and a textural depth that speaks to its pedigree and place.

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines – Leeu Passant Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

From the celebrated duo of Chris and Andrea Mullineux—five-time recipients of the Platter’s Winery of the Year award—Leeu Passant is a project born from a deep respect for South Africa’s historic winemaking traditions, in partnership with Analjit Singh.

Sourced from the iron- and sandstone-rich soils on the mid-slopes of the Helderberg Mountain in Stellenbosch, this Cabernet Sauvignon is both powerful and polished. Aromas of blackberries, mulberry leaf, and dried thyme draw you in, while the palate delivers pristine notes of sapphire plum, fine-grained tannins, and a silky texture. The finish is long, fresh, and impeccably balanced—a modern classic in the making.
