DGB’s Executive Chairman, Tim Hutchinson, has a unique talent for celebrating those who shaped our heritage. The newly revamped Old Road Distillery is a testament to this passion.
Honouring Jaco Potgieter, DGB’s distinguished winemaker of 25 years, a special plaque now marks his legacy at the site. The distillery also carries forward the spirit of Sydney Back, founder of Backsberg and a revered distiller, as it becomes home to the prestigious Sydney Back Brandies—where visitors can savour the finest “angel’s share.”

Led by Master Distiller Renaldo Fourie, Old Road Distillery is poised to set new standards in brandy craftsmanship. The beautifully restored venue features elegant indoor and outdoor spaces, including an upstairs boardroom, bar, and function area, paying homage to both Sydney Back and the Sinovich family patriarch, George Sinovich.
Tim’s long friendship with the Sinovich family uncovered a rare treasure: George’s untouched cellar of vintage brandies and wines from around the world—a remarkable collection curated by a pioneer. Together with George’s son Vincent, Tim carefully selected bottles now proudly displayed at the distillery entrance, creating a one-of-a-kind historical library of spirits.
Old Road Distillery is more than a destination—it’s a celebration of legacy, craft, and timeless flavour just minutes from Franschhoek Cellars.
