Winter Safari Magic at Tau Game Lodge

Experiencing the spectacle of the magnificent birdlife and game, including the Big Five, at Tau Game Lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve has created such lifelong memories for families and lovers over the years, they tend to return for more magical safaris.

Tau has been a preferred five-star safari destination for 30 years. Couples who got married or celebrated their honeymoon here, often return to relive their romantic safari experience to create new memories to treasure for a lifetime at the lodge, which borders the wilds of Botswana.

The lodge is also family friendly, whilst ensuring romantic couples are never compromised.

Game drives, always conducted in the sturdy safari vehicles driven by Tau’s highly qualified and caring rangers, are age-sensitive to ensure guests without young children get to savor the serenity, as well as wild action of the bush in all its authentically wonderful splendour.

Families with children too young to enjoy a long game drive with adults, opt for a private game drive with their own ranger to embrace family time.

These are just two of many recent return guest requests and reviews:

Dear Tau Team

We got married at Tau 20 years ago, 29 April 2006 and are keen to return to celebrate this September (7-10, 2026).

Please could you advise me on the following:
1. The best rate for two rooms for 4 adults (we are travelling with our children +18). Maybe the family suite with the hot tub?
2. Please could you provide a quote for flights from ORT/Johannesburg airport and/or transfers from JHB. We will be flying from Cape Town.
3. Do you have any star gazing sessions or walking tours during that period?

So looking forward to hearing from you. Dominique.”

My husband and I stayed here for our honeymoon, and we loved every single moment of it. From the incredible food to the warm, hospitable, and friendly staff, everything was exceptional.

The wildlife and nature around the lodge are breathtaking. One of the most special things is the waterhole right in front of the lodge, where you can watch animals gather throughout the day – and night.

Our game drive guide Hardy was knowledgeable and funny, which made every safari even more special.

What stood out most was the attention to detail. The team takes care of everything, and we were welcomed with a beautiful surprise for both Valentine’s Day and our honeymoon, which made our stay even more meaningful.

I was also pregnant during our stay, and everything went smoothly. The staff were incredibly attentive and made sure we were always comfortable, which we really appreciated.

We can wholeheartedly recommend Tau Game Lodge and truly hope to return one day. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed.

Conservation is key at Tau and the Reserve, and you would not find multiple vehicles surrounding any of the wildlife. Here, humans enter the kingdom of the animals in their native location with respect.

During the cooler months, hedonistic hot toddies are only some of the delicious refreshments offered on game drive pitstops in the bush…

Over the years, Tau has kept up with international hospitality trends and as an established five-star destination, all chalets have been renovated and updated to the same level of elevated style. The lodge is known for its understated, comfortable, authentic out of Africa convivial ambience.

For thirty years, Tau Game Lodge has been committed to offering warm hospitality, delicious cuisine, caring and respectful service, and a commitment to create a safer, better world for wildlife.

The Tau Conference Centre, separate from the main lodge, is complemented by breakaway areas when required.

This is not a big resort-style lodge. It offers intimacy and game drives by dedicated rangers, passionate about the bush, its creatures, and the flora.

Both pools, one at the main hospitality deck, the other an infinity pool with a tented bar known for its delicious cocktails, overlook the mesmerizing waterhole, which attracts all species of game, including the prolific birdlife, with several crocodiles adding to nature’s daily drama…
