The search for gold once drew people from around the world to Southern Africa. Thula Mela, a gold-rich capital located on a hill at the confluence of the Limpopo and Lebuvu Rivers, about 200 km north of Jock Safari Lodge, served as a major trading center. Prospectors crossed some of Africa’s most scenic and remote landscapes. Among them was Sir Percy FitzPatrick, a prominent South African author.
In 1982, the Niven family, who are descendants of Sir Percy Fitzpatrick’s, built a fence around the camp to protect the trees from elephants. The Niven family, who care deeply about conservation, planted native trees within the fenced area, creating a cool, shaded space that stands out from the nearby open wilderness. At the meeting point of the Mitomeni and Biyamiti rivers in the southern part of Kruger National Park, the story of explorer Sir Percy FitzPatrick and his loyal dog, Jock, remains inspiring.
Today, Jock Safari Lodge stands in this historic area, with its southern border following the old Voortrekker Road from Delagoa Bay (now Maputo) to the goldfields at Pilgrim’s Rest. The wilderness experience continues much as it did in the past, with a wide variety of wildlife. Guests can explore 6,000 hectares of private concession in an area famous for Big Five sightings.
At Main Jock, this wild setting becomes a place of tranquillity; guests enjoy a peaceful, private stay surrounded by nature. Twelve thatched suites are hidden among trees and reed walls, each having its own deck, plunge pool, and outdoor daybed overlooking the riverbed. The Lodge provides an opportunity to relax and reconnect with the wild.

Main Jock will reopen in September following a thoughtful refurbishment of all guest suites. Beautifully refreshed deck areas, reimagined day salas, updated bedroom flooring and luxurious new soft furnishings come together to elevate the lodge’s signature sense of understated luxury. The enhancements have been carefully considered to complement the natural surroundings while creating an even more refined and inviting guest experience.
