Supplement your love of authentic South African stories with one of the most exciting opportunities to learn about wine at Woordfees in Stellenbosch, from 3 to 11 October.
Stellenbosch is famous as the heartland of South African wine with its Wine Routes celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. It is also home to our most awarded wine farms.
With a comprehensive part of the Woordfees dedicated to showcasing the stories of the people behind these wines, the event offers the perfect opportunity for out-of-towners to explore art as it extends to the vineyards and cellars in and around Stellenbosch.
Among the highlights of the programme is a panel discussion around South Africa’s biggest-selling variety, Sauvignon Blanc, featuring Stellenbosch wines and winemakers. There are also a handful of “wine school” sessions on different styles and varieties, and wine walks. Renowned personalities hosting some of these include RSG radio presenter Marthelize Brink, writer and photographer Toast Coetzer, and chef Mynhardt Joubert.
Join award-winning Stellenbosch winemakers for a book discussion and wine tasting that reveals the untold stories of South African Sauvignon Blanc. These range from the stories behind fresh, coastal styles to complex wines with exceptional aging potential. This is a cultivar famous for reflecting a sense of place, style, and the winemaker’s personal touch. The conversation will be anchored by the coffee-table book The Story of South African Sauvignon Blanc, which incorporates a hundred stories and the unique Sauvignon Blanc aroma wheel. Tickets include both the book and the tasting. The event happens on October 8, at 6pm.
Get out and about
For walkers and photographers especially, discover the Dwarsrivier Valley through the lens of stories and photography. The experience begins at the Le Pommier wine estate, after which transport takes you to the Dwarsrivier information centre for the start of a walk through Pniel, Johannesdal and Kylemore. The route ends back at Le Pommier with a light lunch. Refreshments are included along the way. The event happens on October 10 from 10am.
For more avid hikders, start the day early amidst the mountains that tower above the Dwarsrivier Valley, with guides Sophia van Taak and Austin Lawrence. The circular route runs from Le Pommier in the Dwarsrivier Valley to Silvermine and back; the hike includes stories, scenic beauty, and fresh mountain air. A light breakfast awaits upon return to Le Pommier. Refreshments along the way are included. The event happens on October 10 from 6am.
Listen and taste
Woordfees attendees can also see a broadcast first-hand, when RSG’s popular radio show Bekbasaar: Die reine wynheid comes to the Boland. Hosted by Martelize Brink, the programme takes festivalgoers and listeners on an intimate and insightful journey through the rich and diverse world of the South African wine industry. This is more than just a talk about wine; it is a celebration of national wine heritage, spanning historic beginnings in 1659 to today’s wine innovators. It takes place on October 4 from 10am.

A particular highlight of the arts and literature festival every year is The Woordfees Long Table. This year it once again is set beneath the oaks, among the old buildings of Ryneveld Street and features a festive occasion with outstanding food and music. Chef Mynhardt Joubert’s menu draws inspiration from the celebratory theme and promises an outstanding evening. A complimentary glass of wine is served upon arrival. The Long Table is served on October 2 from 18:30.
Wine School is back in session
Also back by popular demand is the Woordfees Wine School, which has become famous for offering a sociable and relaxed experience, entirely free of snobbery. Expect engaging conversations covering everything from grape varieties and styles to cellar secrets, alongside plenty of laughter, surprising stories, and – of course – excellent wine. Three unique classes are presented by winemakers and wine personalities, together with broadcaster Martelize Brink. The Bubbly 101 session takes place on October 5 from 18:00; Cabernet Sauvignon 101 on October 6 from 18:00; and White Wine 101 on October 7 from 18:00.
