Art@Africa is pleased to present The Ocean Between Us Is One by Olivia Dunkley opening on the 19th of February.
The Ocean Between Us Is One is an ode to reconnection. Through the archetypal figure of Sirena, a primordial guardian of the sea, the works trace humanity’s shared lineage with the living ocean. Each sculpture is a chapter in her story – from the Whale’s gravity, to the Ray’s dance, to the Wave’s renewal. Together they form a myth of restoration: suggesting that the boundaries between human and nature, self and sea, are illusions of our own making. In Sirena’s world, healing begins where we listen to the waves, where we move again in rhythm with the tides.
Each sculpture is a living hymn to the remembering that connection is not a metaphor but a structure. The Whale teaches depth and belonging. The Ray teaches precision and play. The Wave teaches transformation. The ocean between us is not a distance; it is a mirror.
And when we look long enough, we remember: we were never separate at all.
OLIVIA DUNKLEY
Olivia (b. 6 August 1998, Johannesburg, South Africa) is a Cape Town–based visual artist specialising in sculpture. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art from the Michaelis School of Fine Art at the University of Cape Town. Olivia’s practice encompasses both digital and traditional sculpture, with a particular focus on digital sculpting, 3D printing and conventional sculptural techniques. Olivia is committed to producing visually impactful pieces that explore the intersection of form, concept and material.
