Art@Africa is pleased to present Departures & Arrivals, an all-women group exhibition opening this August in recognition of South Africa’s Women’s Month. Thoughtfully curated, this compelling showcase brings together the works of over twelve female artists, including those represented by Art@Africa, residents from Kunye (an art residency programme), and invited guest artists.
Departures & Arrivals delves into the rich and layered experiences that shape a woman’s life — the pivotal moments of change, the quiet evolutions, and the brave acts of self-definition. Through paintings, sculptures, mixed media, drawings, and textile pieces, the exhibition offers a deeply resonant exploration of transformation.
Artists Valeria Talian and Anina Deetlef, who helped shape the vision for the exhibition, reflect:
“The theme explores the many transitions that shape a woman’s life – the physical and emotional journeys that define who she is. From childbirth, career shifts, and personal growth to aging, feminism, and identity, our aim is to honour the powerful narratives that emerge along the way.”
“What does it mean to depart from one place in life and arrive at another? These transitions are deeply transformative. They challenge us, shape us, and often bring us closer to a more honest version of ourselves.”
This exhibition invites viewers into these lived experiences — those turning points where a woman departs from one chapter and steps into another, forever changed, empowered, and seen.
OPENING RECEPTION
The public is warmly invited to attend the opening night on Thursday, 7 August 2025 at 6:30PM at Art@Africa Gallery, located in the Clock Tower Centre, Silo District, V&A Waterfront, Cape Town.
Opening remarks will be delivered by Hamlin Jansen Van Vuuren, curator at Rust & Vrede gallery and guest artist, artist Anina Deetlef and represented artist Valeria Talian.
