Twenty years ago, a group of animal lovers planted the seed of concern for the welfare of donkeys in need, leading to substantial advancements in the status of these long-suffering creatures.
Today, Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary, located near McGregor, is a significant player in providing care for donkeys facing distress, serious injuries or simply the challenges of old age. The Sanctuary also offers workshops for individuals involved in donkey welfare throughout South Africa, all of which are approved by the South African Veterinary Council.
On an international scale, valuable insights related to donkey care are shared with veterinarians and welfare workers in 22 African countries. This initiative is encapsulated in the information portal titled “Donkeys for Africa” which has published 47 newsletters over the past seven years. Most of the information is sourced from within Africa itself and includes a sizeable reference section that provides guidance on donkey care, diseases and treatments, nutrition and more.
