Ballet Legends Reunite for Cape Town City Ballet’s Orpheus in the Underworld at Artscape

Orpheus in the Underworld

Former CAPAB and Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB) principals Laura Bosenberg and Janet Lindup are returning to the stage for special guest appearances in Veronica Paeper’s Orpheus in the Underworld, taking on the roles of the Old Lady and the Lady with the Dogs respectively. Additionally, CAPAB luminaries Elizabeth Triegaardt, Clare Shepherd-Wilson, Keith Mackintosh and Lindup have been coaching CTCB Cape Town dancers in various leading roles that they once performed namely Hera, Calliope and Orpheus, bringing decades of experience and theatrical flair to the production.

Paeper, who directs the ballet, created it in 1982 when icons such as Phyllis Spira, Eduard Greyling and Triegaardt  starred in the principal roles. Another former CTCB principal dancer, Robin van Wyk, will stage-manage the production that opens at Artscape on 12 June 2026.

Bursting with tongue-in-cheek humour, glamour and larger-than-life characters, Orpheus in the Underworld is a comedy ballet set to Jacques Offenbach’s dazzling score, performed live by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Packed with high-energy dancing, comic chaos and visual spectacle, this entertaining crowd-pleaser promises a sparkling night at the theatre and is set to be one of the must-see productions of the winter season.
