This Heritage Day, food lovers are invited to experience an unforgettable celebration of fire, flavour, and South African heritage as VUUR and MERTIA join forces for a one-of-a-kind culinary collaboration at Nieuwe Sion Wine Estate in Stellenbosch.
On 24 September 2025, acclaimed chefs will showcase their craft through the elemental power of fire. Chef Matt van den Berg, Stellenbosch-born and classically trained, is known for his work at South Africa’s most celebrated restaurants, including Waterkloof, Greenhouse, The Test Kitchen and La Colombe. Matt’s cooking is rooted in South African heritage, elevated with fresh, local, organic produce and global flair.
Joining Matt is Chef Shaun Scrooby, chef-owner of VUUR, a culinary experience that has redefined open-fire dining in South Africa. Shaun’s passion for live-fire cooking has taken VUUR from intimate pop-ups to a critically acclaimed name in the local food scene, celebrated for pushing boundaries with fire-driven techniques and unforgettable flavours. With VUUR, Shaun has carved out a reputation for pairing bold creativity with a deep respect for South African ingredients and food culture, earning recognition from both diners and industry insiders.
