In the heart of Franschhoek Valley, where whispers of French heritage linger among the vines, Grande Provence Heritage Wine Estate has stood since 1694, carrying centuries of harvests, craftsmanship, and culinary evolution. This land tells the stories of the first peoples of the Cape, Dutch settlers with spices from the East, and generations who transformed soil, culture, and flavour into lasting legacy.
At the estate’s centre rises a majestic oak tree, a silent sentinel over countless gatherings and seasons. It inspired The Oak at Grande Provence, a restaurant where tradition and innovation converge beneath its ancient branches.
Under the direction of Executive Chef Anvor Fortuin, the menu is a tribute to South Africa’s layered culinary heritage. Dishes reimagine the land’s flavours with contemporary finesse — from wild, earthy notes once savoured by the Khoi and San, to soulful Dutch-inspired breads and stews, and the subtle spice of centuries-old trade routes. Guests can explore creations like Blesbok confit neck with chakalaka and pap, pampoenkoekie with skulpadbessie jus, and the comforting Grandma Under the Blanket, a medley of creamed samp, veld mushrooms, and veldkool.
The restaurant’s design, guided by Estate Manager Marna Viljoen, merges understated elegance with natural charm. Soft hues, layered textures, French oak, and contemporary finishes create warmth, while expansive windows open onto manicured gardens, vineyards, and the historic Jonkershuis, blending indoors with nature.
Art is integral to the experience. Within The Oak, curated pieces from the Grande Provence Gallery lend depth and intrigue, while the estate’s celebrated sculpture garden invites reflection among monumental works and dappled light — where creativity and landscape meet.
Dining at The Oak is more than a meal; it’s a sensory homage to South Africa’s heritage. Every flavour, texture, and detail celebrates the land, its history, and artistry, offering guests an immersive experience that resonates long after the last bite.
