Türkiye’s Sacred Sites for Travellers

Türkiye, known for its rich tapestry of history, culture, and spirituality, holds a treasure trove of sacred sites that beckon travellers seeking profound experiences. From ancient mosques resonating with centuries of prayer to holy shrines imbued with reverence, Türkiye stands as a beacon for those on a quest for spiritual enlightenment.

Travellers can explore captivating religious centres and experience the distinctive blend of Eastern and Western influences that characterize the country. From Istanbul and Manisa to Hatay and Mardin, there’s a rich tapestry of history and architecture waiting to be discovered.

Blending traditional Islamic architecture with Byzantine influences, the Blue Mosque is a site to behold with its green and white İznik tiles and predominately blue-coloured ornamentation.

The renowned Hagia Sophia grand mosque is among the world’s most important structures and sacred sites of Türkiye. Another holy site is the Kubbat al-Islam (Dome of Islam), dating from 8000 BC, with its cave houses and nature, one of the most culturally rich areas of Bitlis.

Turkish Airlines connects South Africa to Türkiye seamlessly, the airline operates a daily return flight between Istanbul and Cape Town, as well as between Istanbul and Johannesburg. They also operate 4 weekly return flights, via Johannesburg, between Istanbul and Durban. Beyond Türkiye, Turkish Airlines operates flights to Saudi Arabia. So, in addition to visiting Mecca and Medina for Umrah, travellers can visit other cities such as Jeddah and Taif – all meaningful places in a country that has witnessed some of the most consequential events in Islamic history.

For Saudi Arabia flights with a stopover in Istanbul, travellers are welcome to stay for free at one of Turkish Airlines’ contracted hotels, and visit some of Istanbul’s most attractive tourist spots, through the TourIstanbul programme.

Rather than spending time at the airport, travellers will be picked up and shown around the city’s historical sites and divine restaurants, all while taking in its scenic beauty.
