Into the Soul of the Waterberg

QWABI Private Game Reserve

In the heart of South Africa, less than a three-hour drive from Johannesburg, QWABI Private Game Reserve offers a rich, immersive encounter with the region’s diverse wildlife and stunning landscapes. One of only two UNESCO-proclaimed biosphere reserves in Africa, QWABI is home to some of the most exquisite animals in the world, owing to the region’s ecological diversity

Named after the African wildcat, Felis lybica, which is the local Sesotho word for “qwabi” — the reserve plays host to a spectacular array of wildlife, including the Big Five and the rare African wildcat.

LETAMO, the largest lodge at QWABI, is the ideal place to stay for family safaris, large gatherings and groups. A stay here is inclusive of daily breakfasts, high teas and dinners, with a special kids’ menu, a number of child-friendly activities and Kids’ Club with its own pool! Amenities available within the lodge include a padel court, two swimming pools, and a spa.

The spacious rooms showcase mid-century modern interior design, merging with African patterns and artefacts for a vibrant look that maintains a serene atmosphere.

Food at LETAMO is a highlight, from breakfasts with views of the African savanna to bountiful high teas and authentic African “braais” in the bush, under the stars.

Award-winning Group Chef Chris Erasmus oversees all the food & beverage offerings for Newmark properties, so guests know they are in good hands!

Throughout the reserve, the rangers and guides are incredibly knowledgeable, providing guests with insights into animal behaviour, plant life, and the broader ecological balance of the area.

The reserve has been designed to offer personalised attention, with small groups of guests on each game drive, ensuring that everyone gets a front-row seat to the action.

QWABI is also home to the exclusive BABOHI Lodge — often regarded as a hidden gem in the region. BABOHI is adult-only and offers a more opulent experience with attention to detail a hallmark of the lodge. The intimate environment at BABOHI invites guests to connect with nature and immerse in the tranquillity of the surroundings.

This highly modern and inviting retreat displays earthy tones, wooden finishes and warm fabrics that merge with modern coppers, marble finishes and sophisticated hues, all alluding to the African skies.

Dining at BABOHI is a sensation for the senses! Exquisitely curated menus are presented with immaculate detail and sophisticated service. Each meal is another opportunity for the team to flex their culinary might. Dishes are beautifully presented and paired with fine wines.

The BABOHI Wellness Spa is an oasis of pure indulgence. The elevating aromas of the signature scents aim to mesmerise all the senses and create a feeling of utter relaxation and serenity.

Morning and evening game drives give guests the chance to spot the Big Five, geological wonders, various wildlife, indigenous flora and abundant water in this biosphere.

For those seeking a more intimate experience, walking safaris are also offered, allowing visitors to track wildlife on foot and learn about the subtler elements of nature, such as insects, birds, and smaller mammals.

Another highlight of BABOHI is birdwatching  a twitchers paradise with its wide variety of stunning birdlife, including the critically endangered Ground Hornbill.

Visiting QWABI Private Game Reserve is more than just a safari  it’s a journey into the heart of South Africa’s wilderness, a chance to witness the beauty and power of nature in its purest form.
