Many of us humans are struggling with dust and pollen allergies; we can’t wait for the real rains to come. Up on Melville Koppies, plants are revelling in longer days and warmer temperatures. Dainty spring flowers are relishing being taller than the recently burnt grass, while the delicate fragrance of the buds on many bushes and trees wafts around you as you wander on the many paths through the koppies. Even the flowers that shoot from bulbs are coming into their own, while the underground tree, the sand-apple (dwarf mobola plum), is covering the Koppies in its shiny-leafed carpet.
Book a guided tour, self-guide yourselves along the many paths, challenge yourself on the 5km hike. Safe parking (opposite the Melville Koppies entrance) at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia. R100pp for guided tour, R90 per adult for self-guiding, R50 for U18.
If you’re lucky you’ll see the Grass vlei lily flowering
