Zioux by Marble

Zioux

Zioux [Pronounced Zoo] is the third, and most extravagant, addition to the Marble Group’s growing portfolio of leading hospitality establishments. An adventurous, sophisticated, playful, and glamorous place to escape and break free from Joburg’s urban jungle.

The Marble Group team partnered with GRID, Blackline Group and Blackline Group and Redecco to design the look and feel for Zioux. The concept is a play on the feeling of being caged and breaking free and it plays out into 400m² space where guests can indulge in champagne and cocktails. Every corner and surface in this space has been carefully thought through and pays homage to African art nouveau and is reminiscence of old London’s private members’ club combined with the vibrancy of Africa.

Interior designer, Irene Kyriacou developed Zioux’s décor to reflect a freedom of movement with contrasts between texture and colours and a juxtaposition between serious and fun.

References to animals and birds are apparent throughout the space ––oversized ants, dragonflies and dung beetles designed by Damian Grivas crawl down the pillar. Krisjan Rossouw’s “big five” paintings and red Springbok hide barstools are references to heritage and fun.

Designer Thabisa MjoMjo, founder of Mash T Design Studio, created the sixteen oversized lights that hang over the expansive central bar and Illustrator Sarita Immelmann’s incredible talent is on display in the drapery. Nothing is frivolous. Everything is in the detail.

The menu features an extravagant selection of dishes designed to be shared. Small plates, big flavour, inspired by flavours of Latin America with a strong focus on those from Mexico and Peru. Favourites include a vast selection of ceviche with a special mention to the Guajillo chilli-cured yellowtail, with naartjie aguachile, corn and coriander.

Home-grown South African favourites also make an appearance… buttermilk fried chicken with caviar served on a doughnut;  oxtail vetkoek with tamarind, ginger, jalapeño and spring onion salsa to name a few. There are also a few “bigger meals” for hungrier patrons, tacos and a shellfish bar serving oysters, caviar and more. A decadent selection of dessert has been designed by top pastry chef, Megan Meikle.

The menu encourages a flavour- packed adventure, one small vibrant plate at a time.
