The Test Kitchen Fledgelings’ Nathan Clarke, Named The 2025 Eat Out Rising Star

At this year’s Eat Out Woolworths Restaurant Awards, Nathan Clarke, head chef at The Test Kitchen Fledgelings, was named the 2025 Eat Out Rising Star, an accolade that honours exceptional talent, promise and leadership in the South African culinary space.

Clarke’s journey is as inspiring as it is hard-earned. Born in Cape Town and raised in a home marked by adversity, he began his culinary path in 2013 as a sculler at The Test Kitchen. Under the mentorship of chef Luke Dale Roberts, Clarke steadily advanced through the kitchen ranks. In 2021, he was appointed head chef at The Test Kitchen Fledgelings, a role that not only marked a personal milestone, but also aligned with his passion for mentorship and growth.

The Eat Out judges said: “He has carved out his own distinctive path, and his story serves as a powerful reminder of how passion and perseverance can lead to extraordinary achievement. In him, we see the bright future of South African food and the inspiring potential of those who pursue their dreams with heart and determination.”

In addition to Clarke’s personal recognition, The Test Kitchen Fledgelings was awarded One Star, a testament to its evolving culinary direction and unwavering dedication to craft and character.

The Test Kitchen Fledgelings is located at The Old Biscuit Mill, 375 Albert Road, Woodstock, Cape Town. The restaurant is open Monday to Saturday for dinner from 18:00 to 22:00, and Thursday to Saturday for lunch from 12:00 to last bookings at 13:30.
