Great wines weave themselves into the fabric of our lives, becoming part of our stories, poured at celebrations, and shared at dinner tables with those we cherish most. This year Roodeberg celebrates a rich legacy spanning 75 years, a legacy which epitomises the timeless saying “that wine is better when shared”.
Founded in 1949 by the visionary Dr. Charles Niehaus, Roodeberg took its name from the breathtaking red-hued sunsets over the Paarl mountains.
Developed originally as an honest expression of Cape red wine, the first bottle of Roodeberg was crafted from the 1946 harvest. Dr Niehaus was the successor of Dr Abraham Izak Perold, the KWV’s chief wine scientist and revered father of Pinotage.
With a portfolio designed to celebrate both life’s everyday moments and its grand occasions, Roodeberg remains a trusted South African favourite, deeply intertwined with the history and spirit of South Africa.
From the classic Roodeberg Red to the adventurous Roodeberg Black and the lively Roodeberg Rosé (crafted from red varietals), each blend reflects the brand’s deep generational winemaking expertise. These wines continue to honour Roodeberg’s tradition of creating exceptional blends, enriched by a legacy of innovation and craftsmanship.
Roodeberg winemaker James Ochse reveals that the cellar team’s blending philosophy is rooted in a deep understanding of the vineyards, the regions the cellar team work with and appreciating what each varietal element contributes.
Even after 75 years, Roodeberg remains steadfast in its pursuit of quality while embracing innovation. The brand’s ability to adapt to modern tastes while remaining true to its roots is what has kept it at the heart of South African wine culture.
As Roodeberg celebrates its 75th anniversary, we raise a glass to the wine that has been a part of so many of life’s important moments. Whether you’re reconnecting with old friends or making new memories, Roodeberg is there to remind us that the best moments in life are the ones we share.
Available nationwide, Roodeberg continues to be a beloved staple in homes across South Africa.
