Situated amidst the charming cobblestone roads and rich history of Bree Street, a dynamic culinary experience awaits both locals and travellers from across the globe. Introducing Yatai – Ramenbar, Cape Town’s newest Japanese-inspired ramen destination, opening just in time for the upcoming festive season. Located below Nikkei Japanese Peruvian at 87 Bree Street, Yatai – Ramenbar blends tradition, modernity, and a touch of Cape Town’s historical charm in every bowl.
Bree Street, one of Cape Town’s most iconic destinations, has long been celebrated for its mix of heritage and contemporary culture. As you stroll down this historic street, once the backbone of Cape Town’s early trading activity, you’ll find an array of eclectic boutiques, artisanal shops, and culinary gems. Bree Street’s timeless character—from its beautiful old Dutch architecture to the lively community spirit—provides the perfect setting for Yatai – Ramenbar’s exciting debut.
“We are humbled by the opportunity to share our love for ramen with the community, and we invite everyone to join us at Yatai – Ramenbar,” says Paolo Carrara, Director of PAN Collection Hospitality Group. “Our goal was to create an experience where simplicity meets complexity, and each bowl tells a story—from the streets of Japan to the heart of Cape Town’s Bree Street.”
Yatai – Ramenbar takes inspiration from traditional Japanese food stalls—known as Yatais—while offering a sophisticated and modern dining experience. Behind the menu are renowned chefs Rikku O’Donnchu and Warwick King, previously of Ex Gate and Exhibit A, who have joined forces again to bring a fine dining ramen concept to life with a theatrical twist. “Cape Town is an incredible city, full of vibrant energy and a deep appreciation for diverse culinary experiences,” says Chef Rikku O’Donnchu. “We believe that ramen, with its comforting flavours and rich history, is the perfect fit for this dynamic food scene. Ramen is not just a dish; it’s an experience that brings people together. We are excited to share this experience with Cape Town.” Chef Warwick King adds, “Ramen has seen a surge in popularity around the world, especially in places like the U.S. where sales have risen 72% since 2000. We believe Cape Town, with its adventurous spirit and love for great food, will embrace our take on this beloved Japanese classic.”
Yatai, which translates to ‘street vendor’ in Japanese, offers dishes crafted with high-quality ingredients, where every element is elevated to new heights. From the 72-hour Tonkatsu broth bursting with umami, to shio broth enriched with aged shoyu, each recipe embraces authenticity while offering a modern touch. The ramen noodles are traditionally stretched using an authentic noodle stretcher from Japan, adding to the artisanal quality of each bowl. The style of ramen broth on offer will be a modern take on “Kotteri” which means creamy and rich. The menu doesn’t stop at ramen; it also boasts a luxurious wagyu katsu sando, a selection of dumplings, robata-grilled dishes, seafood and specialty desserts—all perfectly paired with Japanese-inspired cocktails, sake and Japanese whisky.
Yatai – Ramenbar’s minimalist yet inviting interior design, curated by the talented team at SQ Design, offers the perfect atmosphere for guests to enjoy their culinary journey—capturing the vibrant essence of traditional Japanese Yatais in a stylish modern setting.
As part of the PAN Collection Hospitality Group, which has brought Cape Town favourites like Nikkei Japanese Peruvian, Hacienda Coastal Mexican, and more to life, Yatai – Ramenbar is set to be Bree Street’s next iconic culinary destination.
