Joburg Theatre is excited to announce that Cape Town Opera will present Gaetano Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor on the iconic Mandela Stage from 25 July 2024 for a limited season. This production is part of Cape Town Opera’s 25th anniversary celebrations and will first be staged at Artscape in Cape Town from 14 to 23 June 2024.
Directed by Cape Town Opera’s co-founder and Honorary Patron, the esteemed Angelo Gobbato, and conducted by Kamal Khan with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, Lucia di Lammermoor promises to captivate both longtime opera lovers and those new to the genre. The opera’s timeless themes of love, betrayal, and madness resonate as strongly today as they did at its premiere in 1835. With its soaring arias and emotionally charged ensemble pieces, this opera showcases Donizetti’s masterful composition and the enduring allure of the art form.
This production marks a poignant return for Angelo Gobbato, who first directed Lucia di Lammermoor in 1997, two years before Cape Town Opera was officially founded as a non-profit organization in 1999.
At the heart of the production is the tragic heroine Lucia, portrayed by the award-winning soprano Brittany Smith. Smith, who recently received a Fleur du Cap Theatre Award for her role in The Sound of Music, brings depth and brilliance to this demanding role. She is joined by fellow Cape Town Opera Soloists Lukhanyo Moyake as Edgardo and Conroy Scott as Enrico. The cast also features CTO Judith Neilson Young Artists Asisipho Petu as Alisa, Julia Portela Piñón as Alisa, and Lonwabo Mose as Raimondo, with Van Wyk Venter as Normanno and guest artist Sakhumzi Martins as Arturo.
Designer Michael Mitchell reimagines the traditional Scottish Highlands setting in a contemporary context, drawing inspiration from the work of couturier Alexander McQueen for Lucia’s wedding dress. The production also features innovative projections by Kirsti Cumming, lighting by Oliver Hauser, movement direction by Kirsten Isenberg, and the Cape Town Opera Chorus under the direction of Marvin Kernelle.
Lucia di Lammermoor will run at the Artscape Opera House in Cape Town for five performances from 14 to 23 June 2024, with matinees at 3 pm and evening shows at 7 pm. The performance on Sunday, 16 June at 3 pm, will be a black-tie event celebrating Cape Town Opera’s 25th anniversary, complete with a post-show reception featuring wine, bubbles, and canapés. Tickets range from R215 to R750, with the special event on 16 June priced at R900. Senior Citizen discounts are available for all shows except 16 June. Booking is recommended through Webtickets and by calling 0214217695. Follow @capetownopera for updates.
