Jazz Explores New Horizons: Spotlight Illuminates the Rich Talents of South African Jazz

Jazz, with its rhythmic heartbeat echoing through the streets, has long encapsulated quintessential moments in our society. Its remarkable ability to evolve with time is a testament to its enduring appeal. Under the thematic banner of SPOTLIGHT, Joburg Theatre are excited to showcase some of the most exceptional jazz talents that have emerged in recent years, elevating the distinct South African jazz sound with contemporary flair.

Proudly launched in December 2023, this exciting gateway to the sounds of Jazz with the acclaimed Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini. A multifaceted talent, Dr. Makhathini embodies the roles of teacher, village crier, historian, and jazz artist. His exploration of the keys reflects a profound curiosity, captivating audiences with soulful melodies that serve as a soundtrack to his life.

Presenting Amathambo featuring Mbuso Khoza, Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini’s work delves into the concept of divination. His improvisation style is likened to the act of throwing the bones (ukwebhula), aligning his practice with a broader understanding of Nguni prophetic traditions. In this concert, Makhathini will be joined by Mbuso Khoza, a cultural worker and singer deeply rooted in the Amahubo traditions of the Zulu people. Khoza’s unique approach serves as a powerful means of articulating jazz in the South African context.

This concert promises to be a mesmerizing journey into the realms of sound, where the captivating interplay between Dr. Nduduzo Makhathini and Mbuso Khoza unveils other worlds and ancestral lands. The Lesedi Theatre will be the vibrant setting for this musical spectacle, as Joburg Theatre officially switch on the SPOTLIGHT and invite you to join them for an unforgettable evening celebrating diverse narratives and sounds.
