Renowned for both its love of wine and unique wine-related experiences, One&Only Cape Town in partnership with Wesgro, is preparing to host an extraordinary event on February 2, 2024, paying homage to the story of South African wine and celebrating its role in the country’s heritage.

Cape Town came to be as a refreshment stop for sea-travellers since the 14th century and is known for its incredible food and world-class wine. In 1655, Governor Jan van Riebeek planted the first vineyards near Cape Town, laying the foundation for what would evolve into a flourishing global industry. It was only a few years later when, on February 2nd, 1659, the first bottle of wine ever created on South African soil was bottled. Since then, the country has celebrated this momentous occasion, raising their glasses to those who came before and created the industry to what it is today.

In 2024, it would have been 365 years since viticulture history was made and One&Only Cape Town are preparing for their annual celebrations of this day. Dubbed ‘South Africa’s Wine Birthday’, the event takes place upon the resort and draws in a remarkable number of winemakers, wine enthusiasts, and merrymakers from across the Cape region to celebrate not only the industry but its rich heritage and the exquisite wines it has produced. This year, wine farms including the likes of Mischa, Ken Forester, Rijks, Aslina, Simonsig, Hamilton Russell Vineyards, Graham Beck and many more, are joining together to share their stories, histories and of course, their wines.

Guests of the event can expect South African-centric tapas, an open flow of wine from an extensive number of wine farms to sample from, live music including beloved local duo Acoustic Element and wine-related activities to enjoy. Held on the Vista deck, alongside the water canals that surround the resort, the setting is perfect for a wonderful afternoon to enjoy time amongst friends and wine-lovers, filled with laughter and conversation as sparkling as the Cap Classique being sipped on.

Every dish made has been meticulously selected to compliment the featured wine farms, ensuring that every bite harmonises with the wine, including a traditional lamb spit. A map of the ‘wine route’ will be available for guests experience the wine route of One&Only Cape Town, leading them down a path that tells the story of wine and its history. Join them in toasting to the spirit of unity and the future of South African wine raising our glasses to many more years of wine and camaraderie.
